Location: Taupo Bay, Northland

Completion: December 2010

Client: Hatton Family Trust

Services provided:

  • Harvesting and marketing of 50 Ha’s of Radiata Pine
  • ETS registration and mapping
  • Block replanting and re-establishment

Job description:
The Hatton family owns 50 hectares of Radiata in the stunning Taupo Bay area of Northland. While being a stunning location the area presented a number of challenges to bring the trees to market. After a competitive process, Chris Hatton engaged Woodbank to manage the harvesting and marketing of the Trusts trees and re-establishment of the area back into pines.

Result:
Woodbank presented a well rounded and transparent proposal. The client understood all the risks before the job started. By the nature of the site we had a number of complications – Maori arch sites, Kiwi habitats, coastal reserves, riparian zones – you name it. Woodbank managed the entire process with affected and interested parties with no issues. The return generated from the harvest was excellent, with Woodbank managing a good mix of domestic and export sales to optimise the return from month to month in a volatile export market. Woodbank are involved with the forest on-going and will be planting the block back into trees this winter. During the harvest Woodbank also completed the ETS registration.

We could not speak highly enough of Woodbanks involvement and management in the harvesting of our forest. The process was highly transparent throughout and all aspects of the operation were managed superbly well. We received timely feedback on market pricing, harvesting progress and operational reports. Woodbank did a great job of managing relationships with all affected parties including our resident Kiwis!

Testimony to the rounded service offer and cashflow focus from Woodbank, they also registered our forest under the ETS Forest Allocation Plan and we have since received our first tranch of NZUs. This revenue will be utilized to offset some of the re-establishment costs of the new rotation. We could not recommend Woodbank highly enough.
Chris Hatton – Trustee.
